The “Metal God,” also known as Halford, is undeniably an icon in the hard-rock scene. He leads the legendary band Judas Priest, who, alongside Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, are revered as pioneers of British heavy metal. Despite his flamboyant stage presence and provocative outfits during the 80s (apparently, riding onto the stage on a motorcycle clad in leather and chrome before launching into “Hell Bent For Leather” wasn’t clear enough), Halford struggled with keeping his sexuality private for many years. In 1998, he made the brave decision to come out to The Advocate, which he described as “the best thing I could have done for myself.” Surprisingly, his fears of backlash were put to rest as fans flooded him with countless messages of support. While metal has generally been an LGBTQ+ tolerant genre, Halford’s influential position only further solidifies this acceptance.
