Kate Pierson, a vital member of The B-52s, the renowned Athens, Georgia band, played a significant role in establishing their LGBTQ+ connection. With chart-topping hits like “Rock Lobster” in the late 70s and “Love Shack” in the 80s, their mainstream success was undeniable. In fact, the music video for “Love Shack” even featured the exuberant RuPaul, leaving no doubt about their affiliation. Throughout the 80s, they garnered a devoted fan base and collaborated with influential figures such as David Byrne from Talking Heads and esteemed DJ Shep Pettibone. However, tragedy struck when guitarist Ricky Wilson passed away from AIDS in 1985, leading to a hiatus for the band. Fortunately, they regrouped three years later and have continued to captivate audiences with their energetic performances on tour to this very day.
